We took down a very large Eucalyptus tree this summer in an unusual manner (for us) – we cut a notch and dropped in between a garage and a small tree that was not to be harmed. Usually we have to take trees like this down piece by piece. This time we had room to work! I got a video of the tree falling! (Click the link to see the video)
Here are some photos taken by Lee Ostubo (The Digital Photo Guy)!
That is a big one. Lloyd said he hoped you did not have to chip all of that!
We took all the big stuff for firewood, and had a skid-steer to load it!
What size saw you using there? Looks like one of the newer models. I have an 066 stihl w/ a 3 ft bar. That is really a tree eater when you got a big tree to work on. That sure is pretty wood. Is it a hard wood or a soft wood like willow? I know nothing about Eucalyptus trees.
We use the little 192 (14″) trim saws the most. We carry a 361 (20″) all the time. I have a 460 (32″) I keep in the shop that goes out on lots of removals where I need one last large cut at the ground. My biggest is an 880 (48″ bar) that I rarely use, but am glad to have at certain times! The 066/36″ is a great combination, but one I skipped to go all the way to the 880!
Eucalyptus wood is really pretty. It is very heavy, hard and brittle – great firewood. When it dries it tends to check and warp, so it is hard to come up with usable pieces for woodworking. There are folks who slab it, dry it, then mill it. But, handling such huge pieces is tough so I usually just dump it off for a firewood guy and let him deal with it!
